The Elmira Heights Police Department is comprised entirely of patrol officers. Each officer is responsible for every area of policing. Every officer is trained to do the following:
- Provide traffic enforcement
- Investigate all criminal and petty offenses
- Provide parking enforcement
- Handle their own clerical tasks (there is no clerical staff)
- Handle complaints from citizens
- Warrant service
- Courtroom testimony
In edition officers are assigned specific tasks for special circumstances or assignments. The following are examples of these assignments:
- Narcotics investigations
- Sex Offense investigations
- Accident reconstruction (for fatal or serious physical injury accidents)
- Firearms insruction
- Chemical agent instructor
- School Resource Officer
- Crime Scene Investigation
- Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
- Impaired Driver Recognition
- Bicycle patrol
- Defensive Tactics instructor
- General topics instructor
Officers take pride in knowing they not only take the call, but also investigate the matter. Officers maintain their own cases and review them periodically as updates and information becomes available.
