Bike Patrol

In June of 2001 the EHPD formed its first Bicycle Patrol. The unit was started as an effort to combat criminal behavior and as part of the department’s effort to establish community policing. The bike patrol is a good mix between a motorized patrol and a foot patrol.

Officers volunteer for the duty and once selected attend an approved police mountain bike course. The course is a week long and involves officers learning technical skills such as pursuit, slow speed maneuvers and legal aspects.

Officers find the bike patrol especially useful during large events such as the Brad Sanford Memorial 5k Race and the Memorial Day Parade. Officers have the ability to go places that a patrol vehicle can not, such as fields and pedestrian walkways.

There are currently five officers that are able to be deployed as a bicycle patrol. Officers use Trek bicycles that are specially made for patrol. The bicycle is rigged with lighting and a storage bag for the officer’s equipment.
